Timber is recognised as one of the most environmentally friendly, commercial building materials. In comparison to PVC and steel, timber uses only a fraction of the non-renewable fossil fuels burned in production, and young trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they grow.
In addition, the natural beauty and tactile quality of wood makes it a must have for contemporary or tradition homes. N E Stairs Ltd carefully considers every step of the process, from the preparation and treatment of the natural wood, to expert design and craftsmanship. This attention to detail ensures that the results will be not only practical and durable, but also aesthetically stunning.
N E Stairs Ltd is committed to operating in an environmentally friendly manner and takes positive steps to minimise the environmental impact of its operations and products. We endeavour to source timber from well-managed and sustainable forests and purchase the majority of our timber from merchants holding a 'Chain of Custody' certificate. Such certification is linked to FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) registration controlling the sourcing of timbers from 'managed' forestry facilities, where plantation programmes ensure the replenishment of new trees long before harvested timber has reached the end of its life cycle. The Company's suppliers of European Redwood abide by stringent replanting and wildlife preservation policies and many have Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC) accreditation. Wherever possible any hardwood is sourced from FSC accredited suppliers.
We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and strive to minimise any adverse impacts that our activities have. We aim to make a positive contribution to the environmental quality of the communities in which we work. We will comply with all relevant legislation as an absolute minimum standard and aim to continually improve our performance, implementing good practice on all new projects.
This environmental policy forms a very important part of our overall company sustainability strategy. In particular, we will:
Keep our environmental impact to a minimum
Recycle waste materials and packaging
Use environmentally friendly coatings, adhesives and finishes where possible
Source eco-friendly materials wherever possible across our operations
N E Stairs Ltd Environmental Policy is reviewed annually and amended where appropriate.
In 2010, we have taken significant steps towards reducing the amount of natural waste we send to landfill, by forming links with members of the local community. Our key successes to date are:
• Donating old doors to allotment holders for re-use as wind breaks, walls and sheds
• Operating an informal system for removal of small soft and hardwood offcuts by locals use use them for firewood
• A similar system for all of our woodshavings which are collected by local horse owners who use it for horse bedding
N S Stairs is committed to continuing to seek opportunities to operate in a sustainable manner and to work within the community to reduce waste.
